(No. 383 - December 14, 2009 - 10 a.m. EST) The Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister for La Francophonie, will chair the 25th Ministerial Conference of La Francophonie, to take place in Paris on December 15 and 16.
During the conference, ministers representing member countries and governments of the International Organization of La Francophonie will decide on priority areas for multilateral francophone action. They will discuss matters including the implementation of the declaration adopted at the October 2008 Québec Summit, as well as other issues of mutual interest. They will also decide on the location of the next summit and approve La Francophonie’s programming for the next four years.
“This conference is important for Canada because it will be an opportunity to assess the progress made since the Québec Summit and to ensure that progress is sustained,” said Minister Verner. “I will also discuss with my counterparts the importance of strong francophone cooperation on matters of democracy and human rights.”
While attending the Paris conference, Minister Verner will also hold bilateral meetings with other ministers on matters of common concern.
