Canada Committed to Advance Peaceful and Prompt Resolution of Political Crisis in Honduras

(No. 298 - October 7, 2009 - 12:35 p.m. EDT) The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), is travelling today to Honduras to take part in an Organization of American States (OAS) foreign ministers’ mission aimed at helping to resolve the current political crisis in Honduras.

"Canada is contributing to the peaceful resolution of the political crisis in Honduras through its participation in current OAS efforts to initiate and support a national dialogue involving both parties, as well as through bilateral efforts," said Minister of State Kent. "As a country of the Americas, Canada has made a commitment to taking a leadership role, and has an important stake in the future of democracy in the region. Canada is a strong supporter of the OAS and, in keeping with the government’s strategy of engagement in the Americas, firmly believes in working collaboratively to advance hemispheric governance, prosperity and security."

Since the first OAS foreign ministers’ mission to Honduras in August, Minister of State Kent has spoken with both Roberto Micheletti and President Manuel Zelaya to encourage them to reach a peaceful and negotiated solution.

"We are hopeful that the mission will help advance the process of national dialogue and reconciliation involving representatives of both parties," said Minister of State Kent. "The discussions will use, as a starting point, the San José Accord proposed by President Óscar Arias of Costa Rica.

"I am pleased to take part, on behalf of Canada, in this renewed OAS effort in support of the process of national dialogue with relevant actors of Honduran society. "Under Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s leadership, Canada renewed its engagement in the Americas, and is committed to playing a larger role in the hemisphere for the long term."

A previous OAS mission of foreign ministers visited Honduras from August 24 to 25 and comprised representatives of Argentina, Canada, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama and the Dominican Republic.
