No. 8 - January 12, 2009 (12:20 p.m. EST) The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), will visit Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador from January 12 to 16, 2009, as part of Canada’s continued engagement in the Americas. This will be Mr. Kent’s first official visit abroad under the newly created portfolio.
During his trip to Central America, the Minister of State is scheduled to meet with a number of senior-level officials, including leaders and ministers.
“This trip will reinforce our commitment to playing a larger role in the Americas,” said Mr. Kent. “Central America is a key region where the issues of security, prosperity and democratic governance are crucial. I intend to discuss these and other important issues during this visit.”
Canada’s relations with Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador are reinforced by the hundreds of thousands of Canadians who trace their roots to Central America and who are contributing to the development and prosperity of both Canada and their country of origin.
