Minister of State Kent Congratulates People of Dominican Republic on Occasion of their Independence Day

No. 50 - February 27, 2009 (6:10 p.m. EST) The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), today issued the following statement on the occasion of the Dominican Republic’s Independence Day.

“Canada congratulates the people of the Dominican Republic as they mark their country’s independence,” said Minister of State Kent. “The Dominican Republic has steadfastly worked to improve democratic governance and to promote freedom, human rights and the rule of law. These are priorities of Canada’s engagement in the Americas.

“The Dominican Republic is also among the largest economies in the Caribbean and Central America, and we look forward to continuing to strengthen our ties with its government and its people.”

The Canadian embassy in Dominican Republic promotes the development of political, trade, investment, economic and cultural relations between our two countries.

Dominicans celebrate their Independence Day today in countries around the world, including Canada, home to some 25,000 people of Dominican origin.
