Minister of State Kent Congratulates the People of Argentina on the Occasion of Their Independence Day

No. 141 - May 25, 2009 (6:10 p.m. EDT) The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), today congratulated the Argentine people as they celebrate the May Revolution of 1810, which commemorates the establishment of the first independent government in Argentina.

“Canada congratulates the people of Argentina as they mark the 199th anniversary of their country’s independence,” said Minister of State Kent. “Our two countries enjoy a long-lasting and strong friendship that reflects our shared commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights, democracy and international security.”

Canada values Argentina’s contribution to the efforts toward restoring peace and stability in Haiti, and in particular our joint support to development projects in that country. Through their shared membership in multilateral bodies such as the United Nations, the Organization of the American States and the G20, Canada and Argentina cooperate closely on many regional and global issues.

Canada and Argentina enjoy strong academic and people-to-people links. There are seven Canadian Studies centres at universities in Argentina. Among other agreements, the two countries have also signed a memorandum of understanding on labour cooperation that facilitates and encourages cooperation and the exchange of information and best practices between Argentine and Canadian officials, as well as union and business representatives.

“As Canada advances in its engagement in the Americas, we look forward to continuing to work with this valuable hemispheric partner,” said Minister of State Kent.
