No. 209 - July 28, 2009 (11:40 a.m. EDT) The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), today congratulated the people of Peru as they celebrate their country’s Independence Day.
"Canada extends warm wishes to the people of Peru as they celebrate the 188th anniversary of their country’s independence,” said Minister of State Kent. “Our two countries have developed a strong relationship built upon our shared values of economic openness and respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law."
Canada and Peru have had diplomatic relations since 1944. Representatives from the two countries meet regularly to discuss issues of mutual interest.
"The strength of this relationship is reflected in the long and proud tradition of cooperation between our two countries, not only between our governments, but also between our businesses and our academic and cultural institutions," said Mr. Kent. "Our relationship has been further strengthened by the Canada-Peru Free Trade Agreement, along with agreements on labour cooperation and the environment."
