No. 229 - August 22, 2009 (7:50 p.m. EDT)The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), today made the following statement as he announced that Canada will be part of the Organization of American States (OAS) Mission of Foreign Ministers travelling to Honduras on August 24 to promote the San José Accord.
"Canada has been clear in our support for the efforts of the OAS and President Óscar Arias of Costa Rica to resolve the crisis in Honduras and to restore democracy," said Minister Kent. "We are honoured to participate in this mission."
"Canada believes the Accord offers an important opportunity to find a peaceful solution that is in the best interest of all Hondurans. We are at a critical juncture in this crisis. It is crucial that this mission take place in an environment of reconciliation and security. We call on all parties to engage in dialogue that works toward this peaceful solution.
"Canada has actively contributed to talks to resolve the current political crisis in Honduras and I look forward to playing a constructive role during this mission.
"Canada, as a country of the Americas, has made a commitment to playing a bigger role in the hemisphere. Our participation serves as an expression of Canada’s engagement in the Americas and our unfailing commitment to democracy, prosperity, security, respect for human rights and the rule of law."
