Minister of State Kent Marks Saint Lucia’s Independence Day

(No. 74 – February 22, 2010 – 3:10 p.m. ET) The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), today congratulated the Saint Lucian people as they celebrate their country’s 31st Independence Day on February 22.

“Canada salutes the people of Saint Lucia as they mark the anniversary of their country’s independence,” said Minister of State Kent. “Canada and Saint Lucia have a long history of close relations based on shared Commonwealth history and cooperation in multilateral organizations such as the Organization of American States and the United Nations. In the past year, both countries participated in the Summit of the Americas and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, where we reaffirmed our friendship and common bonds.”

Saint Lucia plays a significant role in the Caribbean and is an important partner for Canada in the region. Canada and Saint Lucia enjoy a long history of commercial ties and people-to-people links. Saint Lucia is a popular tourist destination for Canadians, with direct flights from Toronto.

The Saint Lucian diaspora in Canada is an important contributor to Canada’s multicultural society. Its contribution is highlighted annually at Toronto’s renowned Caribana Festival.

“Canada remains committed to strengthening relations and future cooperation with Saint Lucia,” said the Minister of State.
