Strengthening Canada’s Engagement with the Americas: Minister of State Kent to Speak at Council of the Americas and Travel to Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay
(No. 166 - May 17, 2010 - 1:30 p.m. ET) The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), today announced that he will deliver a speech on Canadian efforts in Haiti to the Council of the Americas in New York City on May 18, 2010, before travelling to Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
“The message I will bring to members of the Council of the Americas is that the reconstruction and long-term stability of Haiti is a case for true hemispheric partnership, not just of governments but also of the private sector and individuals,” said Minister of State Kent. “It is only by working together, in close cooperation with the Government of Haiti, that we will be able to effectively rebuild this much-beloved member of our family in the Americas.”
Canada’s commitment to Haiti is a key element of its foreign policy and engagement in the Americas.
Minister of State Kent will then travel to Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay to advance Canada’s foreign policy priority of strengthened engagement in the Americas.
“My visit to these three South American countries reflects Canada’s commitment to the Americas,” added Minister of State Kent. “By strengthening relationships and working together with partners in the region, Canada is advancing democratic governance, prosperity and security throughout the hemisphere.”
While in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, Minister of State Kent will meet with senior government officials, as well as with members of civil society organizations and representatives of Canadian businesses in those countries.
He will conclude his visit to the region in Buenos Aires, where he will represent Canada at the official events commemorating the bicentennial of Argentina’s independence.
“Our presence at these important events highlights the long-standing relationship between Canada and Argentina, which is built on shared values of democratic governance, promotion of human rights, and commitment to international peace and security,” said Minister of State Kent.
