(No. 150 - June 1, 2011 - 2:40 p.m. ET) The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), today issued the following statement after a special session of the Organization of American States (OAS) General Assembly at which Honduras’ suspension from the organization was lifted:
“Canada is pleased that Honduras’ suspension from the OAS has been lifted and that Honduras will once again be engaged as a full member of the organization, the principal vehicle for multilateral engagement in the Americas.
“Canada has been a strong advocate of the full reintegration of Honduras into the regional and international community, including into the OAS. OAS members have recognized the important steps President Porfirio Lobo has taken to help move Honduras closer to national reconciliation and to help Hondurans regain a sense of trust in the country’s democratic institutions.
“The agreement to welcome Honduras back into the OAS provides closure on the 2009 political crisis and allows the OAS to use all of the tools available to it to engage with Honduras and meet the challenges ahead.
“The timing of this decision is particularly opportune given that it will allow Honduras to participate as a full member in the 41st regular session of the OAS General Assembly scheduled to take place in San Salvador from June 5 to 7, 2011.”
