Canada Pleased With Release of Honduran Truth and Reconciliation Commission Final Report

(No. 190 - July 7, 2011 - 3 p.m. ET) The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs) today issued the following statement on the release of the final report of Honduras’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission:

"Canada welcomes the release of the final report of Honduras’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. We believe that the work of the Commission, culminating in this report, will contribute to Honduras’s healing process and help bring the country closer to national reconciliation.

"The release of the report is a crucial step toward acknowledging the causes and consequences of the 2009 political crisis. We are hopeful that it will shed new light on those events and help ensure that Hondurans never again endure such an ordeal.

"We are also hopeful that the Commission’s work will ultimately contribute to strengthening the country’s political institutions and helping Hondurans gain greater confidence in their democratic institutions.

"Canada has been a strong supporter the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and we are very proud of the role that Commissioner Michael Kergin, a Canadian, has played in this process."
