Minister of State Ablonczy to Attend Annual Meeting of Inter-American Development Bank Governors and Make Official Visits to Peru and Honduras

March 15, 2012 - The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), today announced that she will attend the annual meeting of the board of governors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Montevideo, Uruguay, from March 18 to 19, 2012.

“This year marks the 40th anniversary of Canada’s partnership with the IDB,” said Minister of State Ablonczy. “Our commitment to this organization and to our neighbours in the Americas has only grown stronger over the years. Canada views the Bank as key to assisting the development priorities of the hemisphere, and I look forward to participating in the IDB meeting to further advance the Bank’s important work in the region.”

The IDB is the main source of multilateral financing for economic, social and institutional development in Latin America and the Caribbean. Canada joined the IDB in 1972 and has been an important contributor to the IDB’s ordinary capital resources and trust funds.

Minister of State Ablonczy will address the inaugural session of the annual meeting on March 19. She will then travel to Peru and Honduras for official visits on March 20 and 22, respectively, and have meetings to advance Canada’s bilateral relationships with both countries.
