Canada Condemns Deadly Attack on Journalists in Afghanistan

April 4, 2014 - The Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State (Foreign Affairs and Consular), today issued the following statement:

“Canada strongly condemns today’s cowardly attack in Afghanistan’s Khost province, which took the life of one journalist and seriously injured another, who is Canadian. The two were in eastern Afghanistan to cover preparations for the country’s presidential election tomorrow.

“All Canadians join me in extending our thoughts and prayers to the family, friends and colleagues of these two women.

“This attack is a stark reminder of the often difficult environment faced by journalists in Afghanistan, who have been subject to attacks by insurgents. Canada continues to be a strong proponent of the right to freedom of expression around the world, including a free media.

“Consular officials in Kabul and in Ottawa are providing consular assistance.”
