Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), meets with Dr. Dominique Tessier, Medical Director and founder of the Travel Medicine Clinic of the Quartier Latin in Montreal on October 11, 2011.
Minister Ablonczy and Dr. Tessier discussed issues affecting Canadian travellers in general as well as the growing trend of medical tourism.
"Canadians are responsible for their own well-being abroad and they should make informed decisions," said Minister Ablonczy. "Our Government has many tools and publications to help Canadians prepare for their trips abroad including a guide specific to travel health."
In 2010, there were some 770 consular cases involving a Canadian requiring medical assistance abroad -- one in four distress cases in Cuba was related to medical assistance; in China and the United Kingdom, it was one in ten.
The Government of Canada publication ‘Well on Your Way, A Canadian’s Guide to Healthy Travel Abroad’ includes essential information on understanding travel health risks; taking preventive measures before, during and after their travel; coping with a health emergency abroad; and accessing consular services in a health emergency. This publication is available free of charge at travel.gc.ca and travelhealth.gc.ca.
