Ablonczy Welcomes President-Elect Peña Nieto of Mexico

November 28, 2012 - Ottawa - The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), greets President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico upon his arrival in Ottawa yesterday.

Peña Nieto, who is making his first visit to Canada in his capacity as President-elect, will be inaugurated as president on December 1.

The President-elect will meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Governor General David Johnston and government ministers during his 24-hour visit to Canada.

Canada and Mexico have developed a comprehensive relationship that spans a wide range of interests and sectors, including trade and investment, security and people-to-people links.

Canada and Mexico are amongst each other’s largest trade partners. Bilateral merchandise trade has grown nearly seven-fold since NAFTA took effect in 1994, surpassing $30 billion in 2011.
