February 15, 2013 - Managua - The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), meets with Samuel Santos, Nicaragua’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. This is the first visit by a Canadian Cabinet minister to Nicaragua since 2009.
Minister Ablonczy and Minister Santos were joined for discussions at the Foreign Ministry by Orlando Solórzano, Minister of Industry and Commerce, and Valdrack Jaentschke, Deputy Foreign Minister for Cooperation. Together, the four discussed the growing trade relationship between the two countries, Nicaragua’s domestic and international priorities, and the successful work accomplished by the Canadian International Development Agency in collaboration with the Government of Nicaragua.
In 2011, two-way merchandise trade between Canada and Nicaragua reached $371 million, a 45-percent increase since 2010. Nicaragua is Canada’s third-largest trading partner in Central America.
