Minister Ablonczy Meets with Chile’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs

February 21, 2013 - Santiago - The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), meets with Alfonso Silva, Chile’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Canada’s relationship with Chile is well established, multi-faceted and growing. Cooperation between the two countries is anchored in shared values, a strong trade and investment relationship and extensive people-to-people ties. Canada and Chile work closely together on bilateral, regional and global issues, including defence cooperation, public safety and education.

In 2012, Canada and Chile celebrated the 15th anniversary of the Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement, which continues to be the cornerstone of their flourishing trade and investment relationship. Last year, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the expansion of the Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement, which will provide increased access to the Chilean market for Canadian businesses.

Chile is one of four members of the Pacific Alliance, along with Colombia, Mexico and Peru. Canada became an observer to the Pacific Alliance in the fall of 2012.
