Minister Ablonczy Launches Foursquare Account at Ottawa Travel and Vacation Show

March 9, 2013 - Ottawa - The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), joins participants at the 2013 Ottawa Travel and Vacation show to announce the new Foursquare account.

The Government of Canada is committed to giving Canadians the best information possible so that they are prepared when they travel beyond Canada’s borders. To that end, the government has taken bold new steps so that Canadians can tap into those resources from wherever they are in the world through the latest social media channels.

This past November, Minister Ablonczy launched the new, the single authoritative and comprehensive source for all government-related travel information to help Canadians be informed before, during and after their travels. The easy-to-use website delivers useful travel-related information so that Canadians can make informed decisions about travelling and living abroad safely—and can truly enjoy their vacations. Alongside the new comprehensive website, the government launched the Travel Smart mobile application and Twitter and Facebook accounts.

The launch of the new Foursquare account coincides with the busy March break travel season and places a special emphasis on giving tips to Canadians who are travelling to the southern United States, Mexico and the Caribbean.

In 2011 alone, Canadians took a total of 59 million trips outside the country.

The Ottawa Travel and Vacation show is an annual event and is expected to draw over 17,000 attendees this year. Over 190 travel and vacation exhibits from more than 50 countries are represented by their tourist boards or embassies.
