June 19, 2013 - Ottawa - The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and General Thomas J. Lawson, Chief of the Defence Staff, announce the deployment of Canadian Forces personnel to Haiti from June to December 2013, as part of the Brazilian battalion in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).

The deployment of Canadian Forces personnel within a Brazilian battalion reflects Canada’s commitment to regional peace and security and supports the Government of Canada’s engagement in the Americas.

Through its continued support of MINUSTAH, Canada works closely with the UN to support the Government of Haiti’s efforts to ensure security and stability for its people. MINUSTAH has been critical in stabilizing the security situation in Haiti and has made important contributions by assisting with the conduct of elections, building up institutional capacity and helping to develop a more effective police force, legal system and correctional service.
