Minister Van Loan Expresses Concern over Potential Suspension of BlackBerry Services in United Arab Emirates

(No. 247 - August 5, 2010 - 4 p.m. ET) The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of International Trade, today issued the following statement:

“The Government of Canada is aware of the news reports regarding a ban on some BlackBerry services in the United Arab Emirates. We are concerned about these reports and their broader implications.

“Research in Motion is a global innovator in communications and has been designing industry-leading wireless data products for over 20 years.

“The BlackBerry is an important business tool that is essential to economic and trade relations.

“We are in contact with Research in Motion about this issue and have been working with government officials in the United Arab Emirates to help RIM identify their concerns and find solutions.

“The Government of Canada will continue to stand up for Canadian business both at home and abroad.”
