Minister Van Loan Statement on Discussion with Saudi Arabian Deputy Minister of the Interior

(No. 253 - August 11, 2010 - 7 a.m. ET) The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of International Trade, today issued the following statement regarding his telephone call to Prince Mohammad Bin Naif Al Saud, Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Minister of the Interior:

“I spoke with Prince Mohammad Bin Naif Al Saud yesterday afternoon. I told him that I am pleased with the significant progress made in recent months in Canada-Saudi Arabia relations.

“It was in the context of strengthening our relations that I called him concerning the operation of Research in Motion’s BlackBerry services in Saudi Arabia.

“I wanted to convey that the Government of Canada welcomed the news that BlackBerry services are continuing in Saudi Arabia.

“We discussed how the BlackBerry is an important business tool that contributes to economic and trade relations. The free flow of information, facilitated by devices like the BlackBerry, is fundamental to business operations in today’s global economy.

“I also committed Canadian government officials to continue to be in close contact with Research in Motion and officials in Saudi Arabia to support the company’s efforts to find a solution.”
