Minister Fast Welcomes New U.S. Trade Representative

June 19, 2013 - The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, today made the following statement regarding the confirmation of Michael Froman as United States Trade Representative:

“On behalf of all Canadians, I’d like to congratulate Michael Froman on his appointment to the position of United States Trade Representative. I have gotten to know Ambassador Froman in his previous role in the Obama Administration, and I know his leadership and commitment to free and open trade will continue to make the Canada-U.S. partnership the envy of the world.

“In order to create new jobs and deliver greater prosperity for Canadians and Americans alike, our governments continue to work together to remove unnecessary red tape and other growth-stifling non-tariff barriers. We are doing this in a number of different ways, including through our work on the Beyond the Border Action Plan and the Regulatory Cooperation Council Joint Action Plan.

“We’re also building on the success of NAFTA by working together to increase trade liberalization through the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations.

“I look forward to working with Ambassador Froman on these and other issues as, together, we advance our shared interests.”
