Minister Fast Meets with Wang Yang, Party Secretary of Guangdong Province

October 10, 2011
Guangzhou, China

During the first leg of his China trip, the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, met with Guangdong Party Secretary Wang Yang, Guangdong Province’s most senior decision-maker and a potential contender for a top leadership position in China in 2012. The two discussed the current state of economic growth and transformation in Guangdong, as well as opportunities for increased cooperation with Canada, particularly in the areas of nuclear technology, clean technology, aviation, infrastructure, transportation and education. Minister Fast highlighted the importance of transportation links with Canada’s west coast, the strong people-to-people links with Canada and, in particular, the strong historical roots that connect Guangdong with Canada.

With a population of 110 million and a GDP of $699 billion in 2010, Guangdong is China’s wealthiest and most populous province, accounting for 20 percent of Canada-China trade.
