October 8, 2012 - Amman, Jordan - The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, celebrates the implementation of Canada’s first free trade agreement (FTA) with an Arab country with his Jordanian counterpart, Minister of Industry and Trade Shabib Ammari.
Minister Fast also announces, on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Minister of Labour, a commitment of $200,000 in labour-related technical assistance funding for an International Labour Organization project to strengthen and modernize the labour inspection system, and promote collective bargaining and workplace cooperation in the Aqaba area of Jordan.
The FTA and labour cooperation agreements demonstrate the importance Canada places on further developing relations with Jordan—a country that plays a key role in the Middle East, especially by promoting peace and security in the region.
The Canada-Jordan FTA will benefit Canadian exporters and increase prosperity at home. In addition, the FTA—along with the Canada-Jordan Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement, which was signed in 2009, will help provide opportunities in the region for Canadian businesses. The labour cooperation agreement will help protect labour rights and will create and maintain productive and healthy labour environments in both countries.
Minister Fast is on a five-day trade mission to Saudi Arabia and Jordan to advance the interests of Canadian businesses in the Middle East, which in turn will create jobs and increased prosperity. Minister Fast is accompanied on the trade mission by representatives of more than 20 Canadian organizations primarily in the infrastructure, health-care and education sectors.
The trade mission, which is being organized by Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service, is one of several strategically focused, sector-specific missions that Minister Fast has led since taking on the international trade portfolio.
Located in more than 150 cities worldwide and in regional offices across Canada, the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, part of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, is Canada’s most extensive network of international business professionals. The Trade Commissioner Service helps companies that are looking to export, invest abroad, attract investment or develop innovation and R&D partnerships.
