April 15, 2013 - Harbin, China - The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia Pacific Gateway, meets Wang Xiankui, Heilongjiang Party Secretary. The province of Heilongjiang is twinned with Alberta. Heilongjiang’s support of innovation through investment and international cooperation is an excellent model for both Chinese interests and Canadian companies.

Heilongjiang is China’s principal oil-producing province. Over the years, Alberta companies have been successful in supplying energy equipment and services to Heilongjiang. In 1998, for example, Sunwing Energy Ltd. of Calgary was the first foreign company to produce oil in China. Commercial activities between the two provinces have now diversified to include coal gasification, petrochemical production and manufacturing, cattle breeding, forage seed, hides and malting barley.

Minister Fast is on a two-week visit to Asia that includes stops in the cities of Tokyo, Yokohama, Hong Kong, Beijing, Harbin and Tianjin before he attends the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Ministers Responsible for Trade meeting in Indonesia.
