Canada was the first country to ratify the Ottawa Convention, on the day the Convention was opened for signature. As part of the process, we destroyed all of our anti-personnel mine stockpiles and passed legislation making it illegal for any Canadian to produce, use, transfer or possess these weapons.
Canada is serious about its Article 6 obligations under the Convention, which say states able to do so should help clear mines, aid victims, promote mine awareness, mine action planning and technology, and destroy mine stockpiles.
In December 1997, then-Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced a five-year, $100 million Canadian Landmine Fund (CLF) to help universalize the Convention and its humanitarian objectives.
