Minister Cannon concluded a three-day visit to China where he engaged in a number of high-level meetings aimed at broadening Canada’s relations with its Pacific neighbours.

During his visit, Minister Cannon:

  • met his Chinese counterpart, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, and discussed a range of issues including the global economic downturn, terrorism, climate change and emerging infectious diseases;
  • paid a courtesy call to Vice-President Xi Jinping to discuss advancing the relationship between Canada and China;
  • announced the appointment of Mark Rowswell as Canada’s Commissioner General for Expo 2010, which will take place in Shanghai, China, from May to October 2010;
  • participated in preparations for the Canadian Pavilion at Shanghai’s 2010 World Expo;
  • met with leaders of Canadian businesses established in China, as well with as non-governmental stakeholders; and
  • on the one-year anniversary of the Sichuan earthquake, expressed his sympathy for the loss of life in that tragic event.
