Lawrence Cannon, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, participated in the International Donors’ Conference Towards a New Future for Haiti.

This conference was an opportunity to continue the work started during the Ministerial Preparatory Conference that Canada hosted in Montreal on January 25.

What Canada pledged at the International Donors' Conference

  • Canadians generously donated $220 million in support of eligible Canadian charitable organizations. Half of this $220 million matching fund is going towards the $400 million Canada pledge at the International Donors' Conference to be spent in coordination with our partners and with the Haitian government.
  • The World Bank announced the cancellation of nearly US$40 million in debt owed by Haiti to the World Bank. This was made possible by financial commitments by Canada and other donor nations.
  • As part of the World Bank's initiative, Canada will provide close to US$8 million to cover the cost of Haiti’s debt to the Bank’s International Development Association, using Canadian resources currently held in the World Bank’s Debt Relief Trust Fund. The debt relief is part of the $400 million which Canada is providing for humanitarian and reconstruction programs in Haiti.
  • Canada is committed to supporting Haiti for the long term. Recovery and reconstruction efforts will take years, and Canada will stand by the Government of Haiti and the Haitian population to build a better Haiti.
