New York, N.Y.
Lawrence Cannon, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, delivered Canada’s statement at the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) on May 3, 2010, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The NPT is an international treaty whose objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and to further the goals of achieving nuclear disarmament. The NPT represents the only binding commitment to disarmament in a multilateral treaty from nuclear weapon states.
Canada has been active in preparing for this review conference, among other things using its G8 presidency to focus on nuclear non-proliferation, disarmament and peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
Minister Cannon will also hold bilateral meetings with Ukraine and Australia at the conference.
