Middle East Peace Process
Scholarship Fund for Palestinian Refugee Women in Lebanon
As 'Gavel' of the Refugee Working Group (RWG), Canada has engaged in activities seeking to produce tangible benefits for Palestinian refugees without prejudice to their rights and future status. A Canadian-led International Mission to Refugee Camps in Lebanon in 1997 noted in its report the desirability of enhanced scholarship programmes for Palestinian refugees. Given the severe poverty which the refugee community faces in Lebanon, Palestinian refugee students who complete secondary school find continuing their studies prohibitive because of the cost of university study. While the need for post-secondary scholarships for all Palestinian refugees is large and increasing, the barriers to higher education put women at a distinct disadvantage.
For these reasons, Canada has developed, with other donors, the Scholarship Fund for Palestinian Refugee Women in Lebanon. The Ottawa-based International Development Research Centre (IDRC) was selected to be Project Coordinator and Holder of the Funds. To date, a total of US $1,557,807 has been raised. The State of Qatar is a major donor to the Fund. Other donors are Canada (through the Canadian International Development Agency and IDRC), the OPEC Fund for International Development, the United States, France and Spain.
