The delegation consists of a political section, a military section and a defence support section. Officers from the Department of Foreign Affairs make up the political section, while the military section consists of members of the Canadian Forces. Representatives of the Department of National Defence make up the defence support section.

The delegation represents Canada on the North Atlantic Council and other decision making bodies of the Alliance. Together with the other 27 Allies, they develop and implement policies, programs and activities. Every effort is made to meet Canada's security and defence priorities, particularly in relation to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. The delegation reports to the Canadian government on all NATO related issues. It works to maintain and develop transatlantic cooperative relations and actively contributes to the implementation of Canadian foreign policy on security and defence.
