NATO's Assistance to the African Union for Darfur

In April 2005, the African Union (AU) requested the assistance of NATO and the European Union (EU) for logistical support for its peacekeeping operation in Sudan's Darfur province. Following consultations with the AU on their specific needs as well as with the EU and the United Nations (UN), NATO agreed to provide airlift, training and operational planning expertise to the AU. NATO's logistical support to the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) began in July 2005 through the provision of strategic airlift for AU personnel. Since that time, NATO has transported thousands of AU troops from African countries to Sudan and Darfur.

Canada is committed to helping people in regions of conflict to regain stability and build lasting peace. As part of this commitment, Canada is actively involved in peacekeeping efforts in Sudan and is participating in both the UN peacekeeping efforts in Southern Sudan as well as contributing to the African Union (AU) mission in Darfur. In total, more than 100 Canadian Forces personnel have contributed to these separate missions in an effort to bring stability and security to Sudan. Canada fully supports NATO's provision of logistical and training assistance.
