Canada and the Circumpolar World

The North is an essential part of Canada's identity and an area of growing importance internationally. Northerners, including Indigenous peoples comprising up to 80 percent of the population in some regions, have brought a number of emerging issues to the world's attention:

  • the dangers and challenges posed by climate change;
  • the need for sustainable economic development; and
  • the importance of sharing experiences and knowledge with our circumpolar neighbours and the world.

Update on Canada's Integrated Northern Strategy - July 26, 2009 Ministers Cannon and Strahl launched a document and website outlining the government’s ongoing work and future plans for its Northern Strategy.

Arctic Fellowships

During his speech on Canada’s Arctic foreign policy on March 11, 2009, the Minister announced 20 new graduate fellowships aimed at fostering innovative research and policy development on a range of issues related to Canada’s role in the circumpolar world.

The fellowships will support graduate students to engage in research with a focus on building a vibrant circumpolar region. Specific policy topics may include: Canada in the circumpolar world, Canada’s Arctic foreign policy and the Arctic Council as a mechanism to advance Canada’s foreign policy objectives.
