The Global Peace and Security Fund (GPSF)

START's GPSF provides Uganda vehicles for Darfur mission

START's Global Peace and Security Fund financially supports three programs: the Global Peace and Security Program (GPSP); the Global Peace Operation Program (GPOP); and the Glyn Berry Program (GBP). The objective of the GPSF is to provide financial and operational resources to facilitate timely, effective and accountable conflict prevention, crisis response, peace operations, civilian protection and stabilization interventions in fragile states.

GPSF's $178 million budget for fiscal year 2010-2011 funds projects managed by different partners: multilateral and regional organizations; Canadian and international NGOs; research institutions; and Foreign Governments whose activities help to achieve Canadian foreign policy objectives.

Projects funded under the GPSF are planned and managed to achieve the following results:

  • Enhanced prospects for reconstruction and stabilisation by supporting conflict prevention, crisis response, peace operations, and civilian protection initiatives in countries in or at risk of crisis.

  • Improved whole-of-government coherence through collaboration with other Canadian government departments, multilateral and bilateral partners, as well as with Canadian and international civil society groups.

  • Increased Canadian leadership by engaging and/or deploying Canadian expertise on issues pertaining to fragile states including peacekeeping, peacebuilding, conflict prevention and humanitarian affairs with the purpose of enhancing programming capability.
