Canada-European Union Summit
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced that Canada and the European Union have started working on an historic comprehensive economic agreement. Prime Minister Harper, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso announced at the Oct. 17 Canada-EU Summit in Quebec City that Canada and the EU will prepare formal mandates with a view to launching negotiations on an economic partnership as early as possible in 2009.

Canada and the EU have published the results of a joint study into the costs and benefits of a closer economic partnership between the EU and Canada. The study examines how various forms of trade liberalization would impact on both economies, although it makes no policy recommendations. - More info on Canada EU
