Fast Facts: Free Trade with Colombia

On November 21, 2008, Canada and the Republic of Colombia signed a free trade agreement (FTA). Upon implementation, the FTA will result in fewer barriers to trade and expanded opportunities for Canadian exporters and investors in a broad range of sectors, including agriculture, mining and financial services.

Canadian merchandise exports to Colombia: include miscellaneous meslin and wheat, off-road dump trucks, newsprint, copper wire, potassium chloride, lentils and barley.

Canadian service exports to Colombia: includes mining, oil and gas, engineering, environmental, information and communication sectors.

Canadian imports from Colombia : includes coffee, bananas, coal, oil, sugar and flowers.

Canadian direct investment in Colombia: includes oil exploration, mining, printing, shoe manufacturing, education, and household paper sectors.  

What an FTA would mean:

  • Removal of barriers that limit Canadian participation in growing markets,
  • Elimination of tariffs on Canadian exports to help make Canadian goods more competitive in a range of sectors including: mining, agriculture and agri-food products,
