A Free Trade Agreement (FTA) exploratory process allows Canada and a prospective FTA partner to examine whether, generally, the conditions for FTA negotiations exist. During exploratory discussions, Canada and its prospective negotiating partner(s) exchange various types of information regarding their preferred approaches to FTA negotiations in a full range areas. This tends to include information on basic principles, modalities, and the prospective level of ambition in such negotiations. In parallel, Canada engages in internal research and analysis to further inform the exploratory process, and consults proactively with stakeholders to solicit input regarding, inter alia, Canadian commercial interests. The information obtained through bilateral exchanges, internal analysis and stakeholder consultations ultimately informs recommendations and decisions concerning next steps, made subsequent to the conclusion of the process.
