Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA)

Current Status

At the November 4-5, 2005 Summit of the Americas, Canada, along with 28 other countries in the hemisphere called for the early resumption of the FTAA negotiations. In the Summit Declaration, Leaders reaffirm their commitment to a balanced and comprehensive FTAA and instruct trade officials to meet in 2006 to discuss next steps for the resumption of formal negotiations. While no dates have been set for the resumption of negotiations, Canada will support the two co-chairs of the FTAA, Brazil and the U.S., in efforts to bridge outstanding differences among members on the scope and ambition of an eventual agreement.
