Consisting of three branches: executive, legislature and judiciary. The president is both the chief of state and head of government. The cabinet consists of 25-30 ministers appointed by the president and approved by the National Assembly. The National Assembly consists of the Upper House (Meshrano Jirga) (102 seats, one-third elected from provincial councils for 4-year terms, one-third elected from local district councils for 3-year terms, and one-third nominated by the president for 5-year terms) and the Lower House (Wolesi Jirga) (250 seats), directly elected for 5-year terms. The constitution establishes a Supreme Court and subordinate Courts.
