Presidential democracy. The island is divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion of northern Cyprus. Turkish troops occupy about 37% of the island. The self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is recognized by Türkiye only. Unicameral 80-seat House of Representatives (the “Vouli Antiprosopon”) composed of 56 seats for Greek Cypriots and 24 unfilled seats for Turkish Cypriots. The President is both the Chief of State and Head of government. Administrative divisions: 6 districts.
