Mark Berman, High Commissioner for Canada in Guyana

Mark Berman, High Commissioner of Canada to Guyana

Message

Welcome to the High Commission of Canada in Georgetown, Guyana!  The High Commission is one of the key channels of communication between the Government of Canada and the Governments of Guyana and Suriname and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat.

It is my privilege to represent Canada and follow the long succession of High Commissioners who have served to enrich Canada’s strong relationship with Guyana, Suriname and CARICOM. My commitment is to continue this legacy.

Canada is a partner, ally and good friend to both Guyana and Suriname and our countries share strong linkages that are rooted in our trade ties and our people-to-people relationships.

In both Guyana and Suriname, Canada has been a strong partner for development, working in areas such as private sector development, strengthening the judiciary, promoting gender equality and supporting Indigenous people. Canada will continue to advance work in these areas and will also continue to provide support as requested to Guyana and Suriname, as both countries prepare for economic growth with major oil discoveries.

In Guyana, Canadian companies are heavily involved in several sectors with Canada being a major trade partner and more relationships continue to be developed through the newly established Canada-Guyana Chamber of Commerce.   A large Guyanese-Canadian diaspora also ensures that our countries remain connected and our cultures intertwined.

In Suriname, as Ambassador I will continue to work to foster increased mutually beneficial cooperation, trade and investment between our 2 countries. Ik kijk er naar uit om met jou te werken.

The Government of Canada also remains committed to working with CARICOM as a key partner in the region, and I will also continue bilateral and multilateral dialogue on issues that matter the most to Canada and CARICOM. Canada will continue to support CARICOM in addressing areas concerning regional integration, economic, human and social development and strengthening democratic and judicial institutions.

Canada also reiterates its commitment to the CARICOM region to assist with the response to the COVID-19 pandemic to the extent possible as now - more than ever - the world realises that a collective effort is needed to tackle universal issues such as health.

As Canada focuses on these areas, I am honoured, humbled and ready to serve in my capacity to continue Canada’s strong relationships.

I invite you to keep abreast with what Canada is doing in Guyana, Suriname and CARICOM by liking us on Facebook @CanadainGuyananadSuriname, following us on X (Twitter) @CanAmbGuyana (English) or @AmbCanGuyana (French) or Instagram @canada_gysr or contacting us by email at grgtn@international.gc.ca

I also encourage fellow Canadians coming to Guyana and/or Suriname to register with the High Commission online using the Registration of Canadians Abroad service to receive emergency alerts and information.  The Government of Canada’s travel website – Travel.gc.ca – also has country-specific travel advice and advisories to assist you.

Thank you,

Mark Berman
High Commissioner/Ambassador
