Canada provides assistance in response to oil spill on Lima coast

February 15, 2022 - Lima, Peru

The Embassy of Canada to Peru joins local partners in providing assistance to address the impacts of the oil spill which occurred in Ventanilla.

The Embassy is helping through our local partner PREDES providing emergency humanitarian assistance to close to 700 local vendors and fishermen and their families, who have lost their seasonal livelihoods in the Santa Rosa and Ancon districts.

The Canadian Embassy is also supporting the ‘Recupero Mi Mar’ campaign to help repair damage to the marine ecosystem. Spearheaded by Peru’s environmental fund Profonanpe, an organization that brings together governmental and civil society organizations, this environmental campaign is focused on containing the effects of the oil spill, providing equipment to the response team, safeguarding the marine ecosystem and ensuring the cleaning of affected beaches. Our relationship with Profonanpe is longstanding since Canada supported its establishment following the UN Conference on the Environment in 1992.

Finally, the Embassy is providing assistance to the local NGO CONSERVACCION in their efforts to help affected animals. The NGO has ample experience in rescuing animals in the context of the El Nino phenomena and is currently working with local authorities on animal rescue operations in response to the oil spill.

Canada is committed to environmental protection, including through the Charlevoix Blueprint on Health Oceans, Seas and Resilient Coastal Communities which was developed under Canada’s 2018 G7 Presidency. Peru became the first South American country to endorse the Oceans Plastic Charter in 2019, another signature environmental initiative that Canada spearheaded during its G7 Presidency.

Canada expresses its solidarity with Peru and, on February 9, 2022 co-authored the OAS declaration titled “Oil spills in the Sea of Ventanilla and Solidarity with the People and Government of Peru”.
