Canada Day 2026 - National day message from the Consul General of Canada

Charles E. Reeves
Consul General
Happy Canada Day!
Today, we join Canadians and our many friends across Hong Kong and Macao in celebrating Canada: a proudly bilingual country rooted in the Indigenous lands we share and enriched by generations of people from around the world who have chosen to make it their home.
Canada Day invites us to pause and reflect on the broader journey we are on together: what we have achieved over the past year, how our history continues to shape our identity, how today’s global challenges are reshaping our priorities, and how we can build a more stable, sustainable, and prosperous future.
We are living through a period of profound global change. Around the world, uncertainty is rising, and Canadians are navigating a moment unlike any we have experienced since the Second World War. In this moment, Canada is stepping forward with purpose. As Prime Minister Carney has noted, Canada has what the world needs and the values the world respects.
Canada is working to broaden its economic horizons by expanding into new markets, strengthening supply chains, and building partnerships that are resilient, forward‑looking, and mutually beneficial.
Hong Kong plays a vital role in that effort. Our economies are deeply connected, with approximately C$39 billion in Hong Kong investment stock in Canada and C$27 billion in Canadian direct investment in Hong Kong. Canadian firms also hold more than C$200 billion in assets in Hong Kong, clear evidence of the city’s enduring importance as a regional and global financial centre.
As Canada enters a period of renewed engagement with China, Hong Kong’s role as Asia’s leading hub for finance, deal‑making, and international capital and as one of the world’s great financial centres remains essential.
Hong Kong continues to be one of the world’s most dynamic commercial environments. It is a gateway for Canadian companies entering Asia and a place where Canadian strengths in finance, technology, food and beverage, and creative industries continue to thrive.
This summer, we are also proud to co‑host the FIFA Men’s World Cup 2026 with the United States and Mexico, the largest World Cup ever. For the first time, Canada hosts the Men’s World Cup, and we are thrilled to welcome the world to Toronto and Vancouver and to see Canada take its place on the global stage, both on the pitch and as a host nation.
To celebrate together, we invite you to join the Canadian Club in Hong Kong for the Great Canadian Canada Day Brunch on July 1. This annual gathering brings Canadians together to enjoy good company and favourites from home: poutine, Caesars, Nanaimo bars, maple syrup, and much more. RSVP at CanadianClubHK@gmail.com or via Facebook at “Canadian Club Hong Kong”.
