Register a Trade Barrier
Before you provide us with your personal information, please take a few moments to review the following privacy statement.
Global Affairs Canada (GAC) is committed to protecting the privacy rights of individuals and safeguarding the personal information under its control in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act .
“Personal information” is defined as any information, in any form, about an identifiable individual, including details of an individual’s personal experiences, opinions or views. Please refer to section 3 of the Privacy Act for further details regarding personal information.
Why is this information collected?
Global Affairs Canada is asking Canadians to submit trade barriers that they are encountering while attempting to conduct business internationally. GAC is responsible for administering the Trade Commissioner Service and works to facilitate trade for Canadians and Canadian businesses. By collecting this information GAC hopes to help Canadian businesses grow and overcome barriers to trade.
The information is collected under the authority of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act, sections 10 (d) (e).
What if you choose not to provide your information?
If you choose not to provide your personal information GAC will be unable to offer potential solutions or to engage the Trade Commissioner Service to find ways to overcome trade barriers for your business.
Should you decide to provide a submission, it is important to know that your submission constitutes your consent to the collection, use, and disclosure of the information provided therein, subject to certain exceptions as per the Privacy Act , and as described in this privacy notice statement.
How will this information be used?
Once your submission has been received, GAC will assess and respond to you with potential solutions to address your problems.
We will not use the information you submit, including your contact information, for any other purpose without first obtaining your explicit consent.
Please be advised that GAC may retain your submission for statistical reporting purposes. These reports will not contain any personal information that could potentially be used to identify you.
Will this information be shared?
Your personal information may be handled by employees of GAC’s Enquiry services and/or employees of the trade barriers team. Your information will not be shared outside the department. In the event that further action is required that necessitates interactions with third parties or other governments, we will contact you before sharing any information to gain your consent.
Where will the information be stored?
The information will be kept within Canada on a secure server that employs several security measures including but not limited to: Passwords, Session-time out security and Firewalls.
How will the information be protected?
You have the right to the protection of your personal information. Your information will be stored on a secure, password-protected server and exported by our Enquiry’s Team to the Trade Barriers Team to be actioned. Once your submission has been exported to the Trade Barriers Team, it will be deleted from the Enquiry’s server.
How long will the information be retained?
Your personal information will be retained until such time that you issue has been resolved. It will then be destroyed, or depersonalized for statistical reporting. Please refer to the Treasury Board’s standard personal information bank Public Communications, bank number PSU914.
Will I be able to access the information provided? And can I correct any errors?
You have the right to request access to your information and to request corrections where you believe there is an error or omission.
