Electric vehicle imports from China
On January 16, 2026, the Government of Canada announced a new strategic partnership with the People’s Republic of China, including a Preliminary Joint Arrangement on Addressing Bilateral Economic and Trade Issues between Canada and the People's Republic of China. As part of this arrangement, Canada will provide an initial country-specific quota of 49,000 electric vehicles (EVs) per year at a most-favoured-nation tariff rate of 6.1%.
The EVs quota was implemented on March 1, 2026. On April 7, 2026, the Government of Canada launched public consultations on Canada’s allocation and administration of the quota.
