COVID-19 and responsible business conduct abroad
The Government of Canada expects Canadian companies operating abroad to do business responsibly, and this is of even greater importance during the challenging times presented throughout the pandemic. Canadian companies are expected to:
- respect human rights
- operate transparently and in consultation with host governments and local communities
- work in a socially and environmentally responsible manner
- respect applicable laws
Companies are also expected to adopt best practices and internationally respected guidelines on responsible business conduct such as the OECD’s Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and the United Nations’ Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (.pdf) and take measures to meet anti-corruption objectives. Canada also encourages businesses to enhance human rights and environmental due diligence in their operations and their supply chains. They should also be aware of the impact that the pandemic is having on vulnerable groups, including:
- Indigenous peoples
- human rights defenders
- women and children
