Canada-Albania Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement Negotiations
Canada and Albania have agreed to begin negotiations towards a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA). The parties have pledged to work together to conclude an agreement in a timely manner. The second round of negotiations took place March 20-22, 2013, in Tirana. Minister Fast announced the conclusion of negotiations in November 2013.
A bilateral FIPA will provide greater predictability and certainty for Canadian investors considering investment opportunities in Albania, and will underscore Albania's reliability as an investment destination. Canada’s objective in entering these negotiations is to secure a comprehensive, high-quality agreement that will protect investors through the establishment of a framework of legally-binding rights and obligations.
Albania offers significant investment opportunities for Canadian investors, specifically in oil and gas as well as mining.
