Canada-Bahrain Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement Negotiations

Canada and Bahrain held exploratory discussions for Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) negotiations on January 4, 2009 in Bahrain. Negotiations formally commenced in February 2009 and were successfully brought to a conclusion in February 2010. The process to sign the agreement is now underway.

A bilateral FIPA will provide greater predictability and certainty for Canadian investors considering investment opportunities in Bahrain. Canada’s objective in entering these negotiations is to secure a comprehensive, high-quality agreement which will protect investors through the establishment of a framework of legally binding rights and obligations.

Although the current level of Canadian investment in Bahrain is modest, given the country’s rapidly expanding economy and increasing openness to FDI, the country offers significant investment opportunities for Canadian investors in a variety of sectors including education, infrastructure, and health care.
