Canada-Republic of Georgia Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) negotiations
Background
Canada and the Republic of Georgia began negotiations towards a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) in 2018, with the first round of negotiation taking place in August 2018.
A bilateral FIPA provides greater predictability and certainty for Canadian investors considering investment opportunities abroad. Canada’s objective in entering these negotiations is to secure a comprehensive, high-quality agreement which will protect investors through the establishment of a framework of legally binding rights and obligations. These modern treaties carefully balance the interests of all stakeholders in Canada.
