Consulting Canadians on trade with Asia-Pacific nations

The Government of Canada is committed to strengthening its economic relationship with Asia-Pacific nations, including with the remaining members of what was the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP): Australia, Brunei, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam.

The Government of Canada’s approach is one that puts the interests of middle-class Canadians and opportunities for women, youth and Indigenous people front and cen­tre. This is an occasion to re-evaluate what new opportunities may exist for Can­adians, particularly small and medium-sized businesses, going forward, and for Canada to set the terms of trade in the region.

It is through this lens that the Government of Canada is seeking the views of the Canadian public and interested Canadian stakeholders

On September 30, 2017, the Government of Canada published a Gazette Notice to formally launch public consultations to seek views of Canadians on the opportunities that exist now to pursue free, fair and progressive trade throughout the Asia-Pacific. The Notice builds on the previous extensive public consultations on the original TPP (launched November 2015). The notice seeks submissions over a 30-day period, ending on October 30, 2017.

Submissions should include the following:

  1. Your name and address and, if applicable, the name of your organization, institution or business;
  2. the specific issues being addressed; and
  3. where possible, precise information on the rationale for the positions taken, including any significant impact they may have on Canada’s domestic or international interests.

Public consultations on a potential free trade agreement (FTA) in the Asia-Pacific

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) is committed to protecting the privacy rights of individuals and safeguarding the personal information under its control in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act.

“Personal information” is defined as any information, in any form, about an identifiable individual, including details of an individual’s personal experiences, opinions or views. Please refer to section 3 of the Privacy Act for further details regarding personal information.

Global Affairs Canada is seeking the views of the Canadian public and interested stakeholders on the scope of potential negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement with the remaining members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). The submissions received during the consultation process will be used for the purpose of informing the Government of Canada’s decision on next steps regarding this potential initiative.

The information is collected under the authority of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act, Sections 10(2)(d) and 10(2)(e). By participating in this consultation process, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this privacy notice statement.

The information you provide is voluntary and you may, without prejudice, decide not to participate in this public consultation process. Should you decide to provide a submission, it is important to know that your submission constitutes your consent to the collection, use, and disclosure of the information provided therein, subject to certain exceptions as per the Privacy Act, and as described in this privacy notice statement. Please ensure that you limit the information you provide in your submission to only information related to the opportunities that, in your view, exist to pursue free, fair and progressive trade throughout the Asia-Pacific. You are encouraged to make fact-based statements that do not include your personal views and opinions of another individual otherwise those statements would be considered to be the personal information of that individual under the Privacy Act.

Please be advised that GAC may publish reports, internally or externally, that contain summaries of submissions received. These reports will not contain any personal information that could potentially be used to identify you.

You have the right to the protection of your personal information. You also have the right to access and to request corrections where you believe there is an error or omission.
